3D body scanning technology for fashion and apparel industry

Fashion - Digital Technology

3D sampling and digital technology have revolutionised the fashion industry...
Fancy yourself as a ‘Fashionista’?

Digital woman, fashion, technology ever thought about having clothes you’ve designed paraded up and down catwalks in London Fashion Week? If you think you can give Stella McCartney a run for her money or fancy yourself as the next Matthew Williamson, then think about the technology behind the creations.

Digital technology means virtual garments can be ‘dressed’ on virtual mannequins and walked up and down virtual catwalks to see how the garments look and drape. Different colours and fabrics can also be tested to source the best combinations. All of this can take place before a pattern is ever printed or any material cut.

Fashion is a Science

Pen to paper only takes us so far. Technology allows creativity to flow without limits and bounds. It helps achieve unique, imaginative, trend setting, off the wall designs that propel Britain forward as a market leader.
Emerging technologies such as 3D bodyscanning and commercial scale digital printing will increasingly impact on fashion design and production processes. You might think about a degree in Fashion Design Technology or Digital Fashion.
Key Facts

* Developing a fashion product in digital format from square one saves time and cuts costs.
* Digital technology facilitates marketing on-line and helps raise brand awareness.
* Virtual prototypes can be used to see what works, saving on wasted materials and energy.

Digital printing

Digital printing

Digital printing describes the process of transferring a document on a personal computer or other digital storage device to a printing substrate by means of a device that accepts text and graphic output. As with other digital processes, information is reduced to binary code, or "digitized," to facilitate its storage and reproduction. Digital printing has steadily replaced lithography in many markets, especially at the consumer and business level, as a result of its substantially lower production costs.

The following peripheral s are all capable of digital printing:

* inkjet printer
* laser printer
* multifunction peripheral

What would I like to achieve and how will my work support my future personal and professional development ... how will I reach my long term goal.

At the centre of technology lies design….with the perception of a need, continues with the formulation of a specification, the generation of ideas and a final solution, and ends with an evaluation of the solution.

According to John Bilton (2010) he stated pointed out that ‘The motivating factor behind all technological activity is the desire to fulfil a need. For this reason all designs should be made or realised - whether that be through prototype, batch- or mass- production or some form of three-dimensional or computer model - if the need is to be truly fulfilled, the design is to be legitimately evaluated, and the design activity is to have been purposeful and worthwhile’.

Therefore I plan to re enter the Fashion industry and work along side other designers using the latest technology used within the fashion industry, and to do so I would like to study and develop in an environment that allows me to achieve the following:

•To bring together the skills, experience and knowledge I have acquired throughout my previous courses.

•To provide the opportunity to study an aspect of art and design that is of personal interest to me.

•To promote independent, practical personal self-directed study, that illustrates the use and exploration of artistic materials. That will be supported by analysis, discussion and evaluation of the selected methodology and chosen method of its exemplification.

Do I know of any other artists, designers or other professionals (historical or contemporary) who have worked with this subject already?

Contemporary fashion designers:

Elite fashion couturiers Jean Paul Gaultier, Ralph Rucci, the late Alexander McQueen, and John Galliano etc

Hussain Chalayan, Comme de Garcons, Paul Smith, Jonathan Sanders, Giles Deacon, Basso & Brooke, Dummies a group of British designers headed by Abigail Lane etc

I will add more designers later!!!!

What do I already know about the subject, why does it interest me? What first steps I would expect to take in order to explore it further?

In 2008 I was introduced to Adobe Photoshop through my BA (Hons) joint Art and Design with Drama degree course and learned quickly that digital technology contributes significantly to the digital age of the 21st century…The age of digital technology has progressed immensely and I have been advised to take the opportunity to learn what I can about the software programmes used within the creative arts department.

Difficult and frustrating at times but just like everything that is new in your life you learn to adapt and educate yourself to understand it and to become familiar it. So by continuing to practice using Adobe Photoshop within my art work I then intend to develop my skills better…a great source of inspiration was from a book called ‘Digital Textile Design’ by Melanie Bowles & Ceri Isaac

What tools, technologies, media, processes and format would I like to work in?

Digital Printing using graphic design applications such as Photoshop and Illustrator whilst using processes such as scanning, drawing, sketching and mark-making as they have always been solid starting points for design work…still very important in the digital age…ensuring that work is original and that the designer’s unique ‘handwriting’ is not lost, but instead enhanced, by the computer. Also photography and other applications such as: Acrobat, Bryce, Canvas, CorelDraw, Dimensions, Director/Shockwave, Dreamweaver, Fireworks, Flash, Frame maker, Freehand, FrontPage, Gimp, Golive, Illustrator, InDisign, Infini-D, LiveMotion, PageMaker, Painter, Photoshop, Poser, QuarkXPress, Ray Dream, Shockwave/Director, Streamline and SWiSh.

I MAY NOT USE ALL THESE PROGRAMMES!!!!

How has Digital Technology impacted the Fashion/Textile Industry?

Hello everyone and welcome to my blog,

I hope you'll find what your looking for in order to understand the importance of Fashion and Textiles within the 'The Digital Revolution'. This Digital Technology within the Fashion and Textiles industry blog will try and highlight questions such as who are the movers and shakers that are embracing this new technology? How has digital technology impacted the fashion and textiles industry? What does the future hold for 'Digital Technology within fashion and textiles?

What this blog will document are all my readings, research and gallery visits, and anything I deem important, that relates to the above title whilst reflecting, analysing and commenting on what I have discovered.
It should build on my existing experience and allow me to develop new skills at the same time as taking oneself into a new direction, while exploring the subject in greater depth...

Fibre2fashion (2006) stated that ‘to some fashion experts clothes will soon turn into accessories for your gadgets. Today new technologies are much involved with clothing and apparels that you can not judge whether you are wearing technology or whether technology is wearing you?... Hence, today the fashion industry is experiencing new challenges: "intelligent textiles", "smart clothes", "i-wear" and "fashion engineering" and are only a few of the trends which will transform the entire fashion industry within the next decade…

Nowadays, many new materials and technologies are applied in textiles and accessories when they are still too costly or primitive for other applications. A wide variety of electronic devices can already be made into clothes and this will rise. New fabrics are already being developed to offer power generation - by using solar power, electromagnetic, thermal and mechanical means…

Today, many designers find inspiration from street fashion, celebrities, vintage styles and other designers' work. Even though there are possibilities of duplication in products and designs due to easy accessibility of the latest printing and computer technology, and due to appearance of the regional or traditional designs in apparels worldwide, it can not be ignored easily. It is really a challenging task to cope with this issue globally’.
